Christian Haldeman

     Christian Haldeman was born on 13 May 1677 in Sorbach, Eggiwil, Bern, Switzerland.1 He was the son of Michael Haldiman and Madlena Gerber. Christian Haldeman married Christianna Kneissley, daughter of Anthony Kneissle. Christian Haldeman was an Anabaptist in Jebsheim, Alsace, in 1709.1 He was living there as well in 1711.1 He was exiled with the rest of the Anabaptists in 1712 from Alsace. He and Christianna Kneissley moved to Zweibrücken, Germany. He was living 1713 in Zweibrücken when he arranged to have his property sold.1 Christian Haldeman may have been the [N] who immigrated circa 1717 to Pennsylvania.1 He died before 22 September 1758 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.24 A history of Jackson County, Ohio, in relating the story of the massacre, claims that he died several years previous to this date.3 An inventory of his estate was made on 22 September 1758 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Herman Lang, Jacob Meyer and Jacob Brubacher made the inventory.1 On 22 September 1758 his name was also recorded as Christian Holtyman late deceased of Lancaster County.1

Christianna Kneissley1

     Christianna Kneissley was born in 1681.2 Christianna Kneissley was also known as Knisely.3 She was the daughter of Anthony Kneissle. Christianna Kneissley married Christian Haldeman, son of Michael Haldiman and Madlena Gerber. Christianna Kneissley and Christian Haldeman moved to Zweibrücken, Germany. Christianna Kneissley immigrated with her husband Christian Haldeman circa 1717 to Pennsylvania.3 They were attacked by Indians while they were at breakfast, and massacred. Three sons survived, Christopher, Jacob and Gabriel, and were taken captive by the Indians. Gabriel died in capitivy that winter. The other two were released in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania 13 August 1762. Jacob Haldeman, the father, was the only one who survived and escaped. His wife and daughters died, with report that his wife tried to defend herself and her children with an axe, but ws killed by a tommahawk. There were various reports of what happened or when. Brock's Gap, Augusta County, now Rockingham County, Virginia, August 1758 although some reports say 1760.4,3 Christianna Kneissley died in August 1758 in Brock's Gap, Rockingham County, Virginia, at age 77 years.5,6
