     Peter Gerhard was born in 1736 in Germany.1 He married Susanna Seibt, daughter of Christopher Seibt and Rosina Hoffman.1 Peter Gerhard appeared on a tax list in 1779 in Upper Hanover Township, Philadelphia County, now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was assessed £2600.2
He left a will on 28 March 1791.3 The transcript of the Will read:
In the Name of God, Amen. Whereas I, Peter Gerhard of Upper Hanover township in the County of Montgomery & State of Pennsylvania Yeoman find myself very sick & weak in body, but of sound mind understanding & memory, thanks be to God, so do I on this twenty eighth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & ninety one make publish & ordain this my last will & testament.
And first of all I recommend my soul into the hand of Almighty God that gave it & as touching my worldly Estate, I hereby dispose of the same in the following manner, that is to say imprimis
I give & bequeath to my beloved Wife Susannah my bed with the bedstead & curtain with what belongs to the same & my chest & one of my Cows, as the choice thereof, except that bearing the bell as also so much & such articles of my kitchen furniture & other household goods or tools as she may have necessary for her own use & then I give & bequeath to my eldest son Jacob Gerhard the sum of three pounds in Cash, as in hard money, for his right of being my eldest son & as relating to my plantation & land situate in Upper Hanover township aforesaid containing about one hundred acres of land with another tract of about forty acres of wood land situate in Hereford township in the County of Berks for which I have two separate deeds, it is my will & I hereby give a full right power & authority to my said wife Susannah to hold & keep my said messuage & plantation under her own hand & direction together with all my horses, horned & other Cattle with all & every sort of household goods & tools whatsoever & with the assistance of my children to manage the same in the best manner as she can for the benefit of my family in general untill to the time when my youngest son Matthias shall be of his lawful age or otherwise as long as it will suit her & my family to do it during which time it is my will that no part of my goods or chattels shall be sold at public vendue & further it is my will, if during this time any of my two daughters Magdalena & Anna should intend to marry --- that then my wife shall provide & give to them all the articles for their marriage portion out of my estate, as a good bed with a bed stead, one dresser, a walnut table, a walnut cloathpress, with the necessary kitchen furniture as pewter cedar & Ironware & tools with such appurtenances as is otherwise usual, as also one Cow to have the choice of my stock: except the bellCow: as to the one of them as much as to the other. Instead thereof I give & bequeath to each of my two sons, as to Jacob & Matthias Gerhard the sum of fifty pounds in Cash as in gold or silver money of Pennsylvania of my estate.
And when my said youngest son Matthias Gerhard, shall be at his age of one & twenty years old then I give devise & bequeath to him my said son Matthias Gerhard his heirs & assigns all my said messuage & plantation consisting in all in four tracts of land whereof one small tract of above one acre adjoins to the messuage tract & one tract, of about twenty five acres of land situate in Upper Milford township in the County of Northampton containing in the whole about one hundred & sixty five acres of land, be the same more or less, as by the respective deeds for the same will more fully appear, with al the appurtenances buildings & all other improvements thereunto belonging. Together also with all the horses, horned cattle & other cattle with the waggons, Ploughs, harrow, with all & every other sort of household goods & tools of what name soever, which altogether I count for the consideration & sum of seven hundred pounds, in lawful gold & silver money of Pennsylvania, to be paid by him in the following manner, as fifty pounds thereof on the twenty seventh day of May then following to my eldest son Jacob Gerhard & the second term of fifty pounds one year afterwards to my eldest daughter Magdalena, & the third term one year after that to my youngest daughter Anna & the fourth term he may keep for himself & then the fifth & sixth terms are also to be for my two sons, & the remaining four hundred shall be paid by my said youngest son Matthias, at equal terms, at in eight years afterwards to my wife Susannah, which I hereby give devise & bequeath to her, together with all such money, as she with the assistance of my said Children, shall be able to get or make up during all such time / untill my said youngest son shall accept & keep my said plantation than / that is to say for her my said wife's use benefit, & behoof during all her life time, & so far as her direction, to give & have any part thereof to any of my children, as she shall think fit or suitable. I also give and bequeath to her a full right & privelge & liberty to remain to live on the premises./ as after my said youngest son shall accept the said premises at the above appointed time) as is the small dwelling house which is to be repaired so as to be fit for her to live in, the costs thereof to be paid out of my estate. And the said youngest son or his heirs executors or administrators shall fully provide her with sufficient firewood in summer & in winter time to be cut small so as to be fit for her immediate use during all her life time & further my said son Matthias also shall provide her with all sorts of provisions, necessary for her subsistance whatever it may be but on condition, that my wife shall satisfye or pay him for the said last recited articles from the time as above said during all her life time. But further (ink blot) hereby reserved for my said son Jacob Gerhard in case it should suit him to take & accept for his use the above recited tract of twenty five acres of land situate in Upper Milford, then it is my will that he shall have & keep the same for the sum of one hundred pounds as of lawful money also said on condition that then the said sum shall be deducted of the said sum of seven hundred pounds of my said youngest son's consideration who there is to pay but six hundred pounds for my above said other land.
But in case my said youngest son Matthias should die under age & without issue, I give devise & bequeath all my above said messuage & lands with all the above recited appurtenances to my said eldest son Jacob Gerhard his heirs and assigns for the same consideration & under all the same conditions & reservations, as above particularly mentioned & further if my said eldest son Jacob should happen to marry & suit him to live with my said family before the time that my youngest son be of age. Then I hereby give him a right & liberty for the same, on condition that he assists in managing my said plantation & that then my said smallest dwelling house be immediately fitted up for my said wife to live in as aforesaid.
And further it is my will & I hereby give & bequeath all the residue of my estate hereby given & bequeathed to my wife, of what shall be left by her after her decease whatsoever it be to my above named four children as to my sons Jacob & Matthias Gerhard & to my daughters Magdalena & Anna their heirs and assigns as to each of them the equal fourth hereof & share thereof as share & share alike: To hold all the above described legacies to each & every of my above named children & heirs & to their heirs & assigns & for their proper use benefit & behoof forever.
And I hereby nominate constitute & appoint my truesty friends Baltzer Schultz & John Shleiffer to be the executors of this my last will and testament & I hereby give them or the survivor of them full power & authority in my name & stead to sign seal execute & deliver lawful deeds & conveyances for all my above mentioned lands & premises to my above named son or sons as occasion shall require & I devise all may be done held & performed according to the true intent & meaning hereof & I declare ratify & confirm this & no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said Peter Gerhard have hereunto set my hand & seal on the day & year first above written.

Personally came each of the witnesses to the foregoing Will & being affirmed according to law did say they were personally present & did see Peter Gerhard the Testator in the said Will named sign & seal the same & heard him pronounce & declare the same to be his last will & testament & at the doing thereof he was of perfect & sound disposing mind memory & understanding, to the best of their knowledge & that they subscribed their names as witnesses thereto, at the request of the Testator in his presence & in the presence of each other.
Be it remembered that on the 10th day of October 1791 the forgoing will of Peter Gerhard was proved in due form of law & letters testamentary granted unto Balsor Schultz & John Schleiffer, executors therein named they having been first affirmed well & truly to perform the same & to render an account according to Law. Given under my hand & Seal & Registered the 10th day of October 1791.
James Morris, Register.4 He died on 20 May 1791 at age 55 years.1 His will was proved on 10 October 1791 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.5
      He appeared on the 1790 census in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was the one free male at least sixteen years of age or older. Living in the same residence were five free males under the age of sxteen years and three free females.6
