Henry Funck was born in 1730 Philadelphia County, now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.2,3 Henry Funck was also known as Rev. Henry Funk. He married Barbara Schowalter, daughter of Jacob Mathias Showalter and Mariah Saunders, circa 1760 in Franconia, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.4,5 Henry Funck was a farmer probably in New Britain Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He inherited from his father a farm of 166 acres which was described only as on a "upper branch of the Perckyoming(sic.)6" He was a Mennonite minister.
This was related by Susanna Funk Beery to her grandson, the Rev. George W. Beery, who had it published in a family history:
Her father, Henry Funk, was pressed into service during the War of Independence, to do transportation service with his team. The farmers in the eastern states at that time did their heavy hauling with four horses. He was very reluctant to accept this service and assist the army in this war. Finally Susanna said that she would go with him and rode the saddle horse. As they were driving along a cannon ball struct the two horses on the lead, killing them both. This so shocked the father that he immediately determined to leave the service and go home, saying that he would refuse further service whatever the result may be.
In the vicinity where they lived, the Indians were still numerous and to some extent dangerous. The chief of the tribe was a very good friend of the family and told her father to watch his wigwam and whenever he should see no smoke issuing from it that they might know that there was trouble and to get themselves away. One morning after they had risen they noticed that there was no smoke from the wigwam of the chief. They took their horses and gathered together what they could and left the place. That same day the Indians started out on the warpath and destroyed everything that came in their way.7 He and Barbara Schowalter moved in 1786 to Rockingham County, Virginia.8 Henry Funck and Barbara settled in Rockingham County, Virginia, about eight miles north of the city of Harrisonburg.9 Henry Funck died in 1793 in Rockingham County, Virginia, at age 63 years.10 He was buried in Trissels Mennonite Church Cemetery, Broadway, Rockingham County, Virginia.
Published material in a work in the public domain appeared in 1896. It read:
